Dadda - Aammmaaa's marriage anniversary - I had a blast

It was  Dadda - Aammmaaa's 6th marriage anniversary. They decided to go out for dinner. I obviously tagged along wearing some colourful new clothes! After some debate the place selected was Pizza Corner.

Aammmaaa I'm playing :)
With me having still some to go on full solids the choice was still theirs and its been a while since they had pizza I guess. If am not mistaken first since I was born!

Aammmaaa see I can stand!
Being a working day the place didn't have too many people...perfect for me to have fun. Pizza Corner offered a play pen where I had a great time while Dadda ordered the dinner. First Aammmaaa and the Dadda  helped me play much to my delight.

Yippeeeeee!!!!
Once done with playing and dinner we stepped into Cream & Fudge, a new chain of ice-creams for dessert where I continued with my antics

My water bottle!

Yummy!!!

much to Dadda & Aammmaaa's  amusement and happiness.

All in all it was a quick but good outing.

One day I will treat you Dadda & Aammmaaa!!!

Atharvan's first head tonsuring ceremony

Atharvan, for your knowledge...
In Hindu tradition, the hair from birth is associated with undesirable traits from past lives. Thus at the time of the mundan, the child is freshly shaven to signify freedom from the past and moving into the future. It is also said that the shaving of the hair stimulates proper growth of the brain and nerves, and that the sikha, a tuft at the crown of the head, protects the memory. A boy's first haircut, known as choula, is one such samskara and is considered an event of great auspiciousness.

Atharvan was to have his head tonsuring in his 11th month according to the Tamil calendar. And the date decided was 6th of August. Originally the plan was to go our family temple then Tirupati. Finally we decided to do it at the Dandayudhapani Temple in Vadapalani, here in Chennai  (http://murugan.org/temples/vadapalani.htm)

Your maternal uncle, Anand Saha came down from Beena (near Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh) to be part of the rituals & the festivities. We drove down from home to be in the temple by 9am when the auspicious time was to begin.

Given your routine, you took a short nap and were  still fast asleep when we reached the temple and finally the tonsuring mandap. It was kind of a boon in disguise as you were to be held by your uncle whom you haven’t met in a while and we were wondering ‘what if you don’t’ recognise and end up crying?’

At the tonsuring mandap
Shortly after we settled down with you in your Uncle’s lap the barber got to work and in no time he was half way through with you still fast asleep. I got down to taking pictures & videos.

Am awake...what's happening?
All of us, me, amma, taatha & paati  had mixed reactions, happy and emotional about what was happening but at the same time scared about nicks & cuts and cautious about when you will get up, how you will react! And it did happen. Thanks to couple of nicks (rather big ones for a baby of your age) you did wake up, first wondering where you were and soon starting to cry rather loudly.

Up & crying!
But luckily most of the tonsuring was over and the barber, am sure having enough experience of these situations, wasted no time in calmly finishing the rest of his work.

Just after tonsuring, ready for a bath!

Bathing time!
Once done your amma took you in her lap trying to console you. And soon you were taken for your bath. I while trying my bit to console you continued to capture the moments.

After the bathing you wore new clothes brought to you by taatha, still crying. Sandanam (Tamil for sandalwood power) was applied to your now clean shaven head.

With Amma in new clothes!

Dadda, Amma & U!
And a few snaps later we walked towards the temple.

Amma taking you to the temple
Only after absorbing a few sights of people & rich art of the temple did you calm down bringing a smile on all of our faces. Once in, we visited a series of temples starting from Lord Ganesha and ending up with Lord Karthikeya where the traditional poojas were performed.

With dadda!
You also gave alms to the poor. All of us had the sweet pongal (http://www.pongalfestival.org/sweet-pongal-recipe.htmlwith God’s blessings, sat down and chatted a little.

Looking at the temple ceiling!

Seeing you back in your elements brought a smile on everybody’s face, as we admired your new ‘look’ and ‘hairstyle’!

Temple with Tatha & Paati

Once done with the rituals & festivities we left the temple to get into the car and get back home. Probably exhausted, you did catch up on a quick nap back home!

By the way, did you notice tatha has a new look without his beard or moustache?

My first photo shoot!

Going by the tamil calendar and tradition I was to have my first head tosnuring sometime in august. keeping this in mind appa was planning a photo shoot. finally it was decided that the same will be done on 4th august by appa-amma's friend prakash uncle! it was a rainy day. amma-appa packed loads of clothes, toys and other things and we left.

once in the studio we got into a room with a big mirror and lots of lights. i played with 'me' for some time before prakash uncle arrived.

after a few minutes amma made me ready and we went into a large white room. i have a habit of looking around when i go to a new place...i think all kids do. i was looking around when big lights were put on and i was left on the floor.

withing seconds i started crying. amma & appa gave me my toys and played with me for some time before i settled down. prakash uncle had already started taking pictures.

amma-appa continued to play with me to ensure i 'pose' properly. every 15 minutes i changed clothes. first 2 times it was ok but soon i felt tired and started crying. appa took me out for a short walk. i love going for walks! we came back and prakash uncle started taking pictures again.

once enough pictures were taken prakash uncle finished the shoot.

we said thank you to him and little later left from the studio. and this is how my first photo shoot ended!

Who are my grandparents?

Just realized have completely forgotten to introduce Atharvan to his grandparents!!!

With Thatha & Patti

Starting with your dadaji (thatha in tamil; father's father) S. Thangavel! Son of a freedom fighter and born into a family of 7 brothers & sisters in the small town of Pollachi (near Coimbatore), your thatha has come up the hard way. Studying, pursuing sports & a few other hobbies side by side, he joined the Indian Air Force in the year 1966 in Bangalore. Though a technical person he spent almost his entire career in sports, from athletics to football to basketball & handball. At the height of his career he was the coach of the Defence Services Handball team which won the national championships & also an international referee. Today an ex-serviceman his love for sports hasn't gone down one bit what with conducting coaching camps & national days. Over the last 2 years he has been conducting a marathon at Udumalpet.

Coming to dadiji (patti in tamil; father's mother) T. Padmavathi. Daughter of a respected but struggling farmer with 3 siblings, she was always the brightest kid focussing on her studies right through the hardships to complete her graduation (B.Sc.,) in Maths only to get married soon after. She was the pillar behind me (your father) & your Madan uncle (chacha in hindi, chitappa in tamil) taking care of their education & other needs right through school. Her penchant for education made her a popular tuition teacher in Nagpur & Kharagpur during 80s & 90s. But then her love for Maths would almost always psyche me out during the exams!!!!

With naniji & nanaji

Now to your nanaji (apuchchi in tamil; mother's father) Deonandan Prasad Saha! Born into a munshi ji's family in the town of Munger, a town situated on the banks of the Ganges river in Bihar he is one of the 7 brothers & sisters (like your dadaji!!!). A law graduate from the Patna University in the 1960s he moved to Rayagada in neighbouring Orissa to join JK Paper Mills where he spent his next three decades & more. He retired in 2008 as a Manager in the HR team. Today he spends his time catching up with his friends & of course with his kids & grandchildren!

Finally your naniji (amchchi in tamil; mother's mother) Shakuntala Saha! Born to a railway engineer, she is one of the 9 siblings in the holy city of Benares!!!! After studying till metric she got married and shifted to Rayagada. Her next 3 decades went in being the perfect homemaker, supporting nanaji in his ups & downs & giving birth to & taking care of her 4 kids. Today she spends her time chatting up with her kids & grandchildren.

When you grow up to read and understand this am sure you will have quite a few questions to ask. Let me start preparing right away....
